For Tzatziki Sauce: Chick out my Authentic Greek Tzatziki Dip

  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cucumber, peeled, seeded, and finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp fresh dill, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Toppings:

  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Shredded lettuce
  • Sliced red onions

Instructions

Prepare the Tzatziki Sauce:

  • In a bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, fresh lemon juice, minced garlic, chopped cucumber, and fresh dill.
  • Season with salt and pepper according to your taste preference.
  • Stir well until all the ingredients are well combined.
  • Cover the bowl and refrigerate the sauce for at least 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

Cook the Meat:

  • If using lamb, heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add the thinly sliced lamb. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through.
  • If using chicken, heat a skillet over medium heat and add the chicken slices. Cook for about 5-6 minutes on each side until cooked through and golden brown.
  • Remove the cooked meat from the skillet and let it rest for a few minutes.

Assemble the Gyro Sandwiches:

  • Warm the pita bread rounds in a microwave or preheated oven for a few seconds until soft and pliable.
  • Spread a generous amount of tzatziki sauce on each pita bread round.
  • Place a few slices of cooked lamb or chicken on top of the sauce.
  • Add sliced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, and sliced red onions as desired.
  • Drizzle additional tzatziki sauce over the toppings if desired.
  • Fold the pita bread in half or roll it up tightly to secure the fillings.

Serve and Enjoy:

  • Serve the homemade Greek gyro sandwiches immediately while the pita bread is still warm.
  • Accompany them with a side of tzatziki sauce and your favorite Mediterranean-inspired side dishes like Greek salad or roasted potatoes.
  • Enjoy the delicious flavors of Greece in every bite!

Notes

PRO TIPS:
  1. Thinly Slice the Meat: For tender and flavorful gyro sandwiches, make sure to thinly slice your lamb or chicken. This allows the meat to cook quickly and evenly, resulting in juicy and delicious fillings for your sandwiches.
  2. Season Well: Whether you're using lamb or chicken, don't skimp on the seasoning! A blend of Mediterranean spices like oregano, garlic, and lemon juice will infuse your meat with authentic Greek flavors that will make your gyro sandwiches irresistible.
  3. Master the Tzatziki Sauce: The secret sauce behind every great gyro sandwich is the tzatziki sauce. To achieve the perfect balance of creaminess and tanginess, use thick Greek yogurt and fresh ingredients like cucumber, garlic, and dill. Let it chill in the fridge for a while to allow the flavors to meld together before serving.
  4. Warm the Pita Bread: To ensure that your gyro sandwiches are soft and pliable, warm the pita bread before assembling them. You can do this quickly in the microwave or by placing them in a preheated oven for a few seconds. Warm pita bread makes for a more enjoyable eating experience and helps to hold all the delicious fillings together.
  5. Layer with Fresh Toppings: Don't forget to load up your gyro sandwiches with plenty of fresh toppings! Sliced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, and thinly sliced red onions add a burst of color and flavor that complements the savory meat and creamy tzatziki sauce perfectly.
