Ingredients

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • ½ small green bell pepper, seeded and finely diced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • tsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 15 oz can tomato sauce
  • 1 lb lean ground beef, 85%-90% lean
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • ½ tsp salt, or to taste
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper, or to taste
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • ¼ cup water, optional, or added to desired consistency
  • 4 hamburger buns, toasted if desired

Instructions

  • Finely chop the onion and dice the green pepper.
  • In a bowl, combine Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, and tomato sauce.
  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium/high heat. Add ground beef and cook for about 5 minutes until browned, breaking it up with a spatula.
  • Season beef with salt and pepper, then add diced peppers and onion. Cook for another 5 minutes until vegetables are tender.
  • Add minced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant. Pour in the sauce mixture and bring to a light boil.
  • Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 10-15 minutes until thickened, stirring occasionally. Adjust seasoning and add water if desired for a looser consistency.
  • Serve the Sloppy Joe filling on toasted hamburger buns.

Notes

Pro Tip: To add an extra depth of flavor to your Sloppy Joe Sandwiches, try mixing in a tablespoon of barbecue sauce or a splash of hot sauce to the tomato sauce mixture. It'll give your Sloppy Joes a delicious kick that'll keep everyone coming back for more!
Variation: For a healthier twist on the classic Sloppy Joe, try using ground turkey or chicken instead of beef. You can also swap out the traditional hamburger buns for whole wheat buns or even lettuce wraps for a lighter option. Experiment with different veggies like bell peppers, carrots, or mushrooms to add extra nutrition and flavor to your Sloppy Joes. The possibilities are endless!
