Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ⅓ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup margarine or butter, softened
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • ½ cup melted dark chocolate or chocolate chips
  • Mini chocolate balls or Maltesers (for spider bodies)
  • Melted chocolate (for legs)
  • Candy eyes or small dots of white icing

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a bowl, mix flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, cream the butter, brown sugar, and white sugar until fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla essence.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix to form a dough.
  • Roll dough into small balls and place on the baking sheet. Slightly flatten each cookie.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes, until firm around the edges. Let cool completely.
  • Add a chocolate ball or Malteser to the center of each cookie.
  • Pipe melted chocolate to create spider legs and add candy eyes.

Notes

  • Cool completely: Let cookies cool all the way before adding the candy bodies so nothing melts.
  • Butter temp: Use softened butter for the best chewy texture.
  • Storage: Keep in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days.
